Returning to law after taking a break to volunteer with 40 charities in one year, I wanted to work for a company where I could be an integral part of its growth and have the freedom to shape my own path, rather than being placed into a silo. It was also important that the business I worked for was ethical and offered me a work life balance where I could continue to volunteer in my free time. I've joined at a really exciting time. The company is evolving and there's a real feeling that good ideas can come from anyone, no matter what role you have or how new you are to the business.
I joined as a graduate wanting to get involved in a wide range of people-related tasks in a role offering the chance to progress in the future. It was my first full time job, but I was made to feel welcome from the moment I started and quickly established great working relationships with my colleagues. Everyone was really supportive which made me feel part of the team. I have been exposed to tasks that have broadened my knowledge and helped me gain a wide range of experience in a very short time. I feel that I am appreciated and whatever task I perform, I'm contributing to the company's goals.
Learning and Development Specialist
What first attracted me to the business was the range of services the business offered, its core values and its sheer ambition. And the job of course - I love my job. I have extremely good working relationships both with my direct colleagues and with people right across the company. I like the fact that the work is challenging and fast paced. There's a lot of variety involved in working with different areas of the business. It's the variety of work, the opportunities to develop and my colleagues that really make this different from other places I have worked.
I joined the company a long time ago! I work with people from lots of different departments, based in different locations. They come to me with their communication problems and I love the chance to design solutions that help them; it's fantastic to see the difference that good communication makes. It's a really busy, fast-paced and interesting environment and I enjoy working with such great talent. My colleagues appreciate the help and guidance you can give - I learn from them every day and this in turn helps improve my performance and skills.
I'd worked as a Resourcing Advisor prior to having children. After taking a break, I saw a role advertised that was just what I was looking for. I wanted to join a company that was a large, multi-site organisation as it was something I hadn't experienced before. I hadn't heard of Smiths News, but the company clearly had a real desire to grow and be an energising place to work. Everyone's approachable and happy to help and we all have unique strengths that we can draw on. The management team are open and willing to listen to ideas and different ways of working to drive the business forward too.
My time at Connect Group has seen me not only move between brands but also between cities. I started my journey in 1996 with Bertrams in Leeds, and I am now based at the Swindon office, championing great design across the business. Working with the right people is really important to me and the design team here are a talented and tight-knit team. We have a great working relationship, which is helpful as there is rarely a slow day. The company is continuously changing - and at a fast pace. Which means that the projects that I am involved with are varied, challenging and call upon all my design skills.
